World’s Ugliest Dog Dies A Peaceful Death

Gus, the winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest has passed away. But his owner took him on a road trip (which he loved) and took him to the hotel where they celebrated his win.
Gus passed away from Cancer.

Speaking of Cancer in Dogs…
One in four dogs die of cancer. It’s the number one cause of death in dogs over 2 years old. A recent news story brought a lot of attention to the disease. There is an organization - Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) that is trying to become the American Cancer Society for dogs.
MAF has a global campaign underway to cure canine cancer, while producing new treatments to help dogs suffering today. MAF has a dedicated canine cancer Web site for dog lovers at www.CureCanineCancer.org.

Guide Dogs For The Blind Saved From California Wildfires

One of the many places threatened by the wild fires in Southern California was the headquarters of the Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar. Thanks to hundreds on volunteers, nearly 100 dogs and puppies were rescued. Luckliy, the facility was spared and the dogs were able to go back home. Watch the whole story here…
Dog Causes Car To Be Impounded

In Oklahoma, a dog got his owners car impounded. How? The pit bull dog was in the car when his owner was washing it at a do-it-yourself car wash. Somehow the dog put the car in reverse, the car backed out of the car wash bay, rolled onto a highway and then looped around before coming to a stop at an automated car wash lane. When the police officer arrived, the dog’s owner car was impounded not for what the dog did, but because the owner could not show proof of insurance. He was allowed to walk home with his dog in tow.

We now know that President-elect Barack Obama promised his girls a new puppy to go with them to the White House in January. Some of you also know that Michelle had previously indicated that the dog would come from a shelter. And Barack has said he doesn’t want a little dog.

Fat Fines For Fat Dogs

Would you believe being fined because your dog is getting too fat? That’s what is proposed in the UK as are part of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to prevent cruelty to animals.
There are three codes that are primary for enforcement in this act: allowing your pet to beg for food from the table, allowing your pet to eat “poisonous” foods & allowing your curious animal to satisfy his or her curiosity.
Ignoring the three codes won’t be considered a crime by itself, but it could be the determining factor in whether an individual is found guilty in court of a pet welfare offense – which carries a maximum jail sentence of six months or a fine of up to £20,000.

Leo The Hero
In Melbourne, Australia a dog named Leo nearly risked his life to save a box of newborn kittens from a house fire. The family of 4 managed to get out with Leo, but the box of kittens were left inside. Leo rushed back in to stand over the kittens. He paid the price for that act of bravery & succumbed to smoke inhalation. Luckily the firemen revived Leo & the kitten were saved too.
Is Your Dog Your Child?

Are you among that large group of people who treat your dog like a child & an equal member of the family? Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan says that you are doing a disservice by humanizing your dog.
Even though I love dogs, I don’t treat them as human surrogates & I won’t treat anyone elses dog that way either. I’ve been able to lead dogs all my life (even dogs that were not mine) because I have an alpha or leader mentality. Dogs not only respect, but crave that structure.

Pit Bulls Banned In Ontario Canada

I saw a video today about pit bulls but decided not to post that one because it was totally biased against pit bulls. I don’t believe in using a broad brush to condemn a breed of dog.
It’s the owners responsibility to train their dog. If a dog attacks someone, blame the owner first & foremost. A dog that attacks someone will usually be put down, but there should be severe punishment for owners who allow their dogs to become so aggressive that they would attack unprovoked in the first place.
Back in 2005, the Ontario government enacted the Dog Owners’ Liability Act which totally banned the breeding, sale and ownership of pit bulls after several incidents in which the dogs attacked people. Lawyers quickly jumped in to challenge the law. Yesterday (Friday) the Court of Appeals upheld the decision to ban the dogs. Read the story here…
