Warmer Weather Brings Out The Barking Dogs

There’s a song with the lyrics, “who let the dogs out, woof!” Well, the warmer weather is causing owners to let their dogs out, and it is causing lots of complaints of excessive dog barking across the country. The warm weather means Fido can go outside and hang out in the yard. Many dogs bark even more outside because there are just so many more things to see.

Many people resort to some type of collar to stop barking. But collars don’t always work. There are more humane ways to deal with the behavior.

Just because your dog is outside and not disturbing you with his barking doesn’t mean that you don’t have to take responsibility for the behavior. If you own a barking dog, be responsible and do something about it. Get “The Ultimate Guide To Stop Your Dog From Barking…Fast!”

World’s Ugliest Dog Winner Is World’s Ugliest Breed

The winner of this years 20th annual “World’s Ugliest Dog” contest held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, CA is no surprise…well the breed is no surprise. The winner is a Chinese crested - the ugly, bald pedigree from China. But Gus (the winner) is extra ugly: he’s missing a hind leg, has one eye, & he’s hairless except for a tuft of white hair on the top of his head. Gus came all the way from St. Petersburg, FL to compete for the title. Gus’ owner won $500 and will be flown to New York to appear on “CBS This Morning.” The event will be aired on the Animal Planet network in October. I tell ya, this is a dog only an owner could love! :)

Crooks Snatching Small Dogs

In 2 separate incidents in separate parts of the country, people were robbed and their small dogs were also taken. In Dallas, Texas, Kona, a little Yorkshire Terrier was stolen along with all the valuables in his owners apartment. The burglars also got away with plasma televisions, iPods and laptop computers. And in Lake County, Florida, Precious, a 5 pound, 3-year-old Yorkie was stolen. Surprisingly, the buglars didn’t take anything else, even though the residents had a plasma television and other valuables. Rewards are being offered in both cases.

Unfortunately it’s easier to pick up a small dog & stuff it in your jacket than it is to try to haul out a large TV without being spotted. And you can get more money for the dog. Tiny pooches can be sold for big money - thousands of dollars. As a result of this, I’m sure more owners of small dogs are considering doggie daycare as a safe option.

Take Your Dog To Work Day

Tomorrow, Friday, June 20th is “Take Your Dog To Work Day.” On that day businesses, animal shelters and pet-care professionals from all across the country will work together to better the lives of shelter dogs everywhere and bring awareness to homeless dogs in the community. Thousands of businesses will open their doors to employees’ pets on this day.

“Take Your Dog To Work Day” was started in 1999 & was created by Pet Sitters International to celebrate how great dogs are as companions and to encourage their adoption from humane societies, animal shelters and breed rescue groups. Take Your Dog To Work Day is sponsored by Modern Dog Magazine and Comfort Zone.

Leona Helmsley’s Dog Loses Inheritance

You probably already heard it. Leona Helmsleys 9 year old Maltese dog “Trouble” who inherited $12 million has lost the inheritance. Well, not the entire inheritance. It seems that Leona’s human relatives fought the will and got Trouble’s trust fund reduced down to a measly $2 million.

Trouble retired to Florida to live with a caretaker of Leona’s choice (the general manager of the Helmsley Sandcastle Hotel), who by the way receives $60,000 a year to care for the dog.

Reality Shows Going To The Dogs

With the television landscape littered with one reality show after another, we’ve got two more with dogs coming out. We already had Animal Planet’s “Pet Star” but that was for any pet. Next month on CBS the first specifically for dogs is called “Greatest American Dog” where 12 dogs & their owners compete for $250,000 for the title. This one sees how well the owners can train their dogs. The premise is the same as practically all competition based reality shows - compete, judges comment, viewers vote, elimination. Watch video of all 12 contestants here…

The other reality show about to go into production is out to find the “Baddest Dog In America.” This one centers around a British female animal psychologist who will perform the bad dog intervention, coming in to the owners homes, diagnosing the bad behavior – of the pet and its owners – then dispensing advice. Sound like a British “Dog Whisperer” to me. Look for it on your cable channel.

New VA Law - Stop Dog Barking Or Lose The Dog

Dog Barking Barkings dogs in Albemarle County, Virginia just got a blow. A  new ordinance has been passed that states if any dog barks for more than 30 minutes, your neighbors can take you to court. A $500 fine is awaiting you if you are found guilty only one time. If you’re found guilty three times, say goodbye to your pooch.

I predict more counties across the country will adopt harsh legislation like this. That’s why it’s so very important to do something about your barking dog. Go here to get “The Ultimate Guide To Stop Your Dog From Barking…Fast!” Don’t wait for a law to pass against you.

Korea Wants Native Dog Recognized

It’s sort of ironic that South Korea is the first country to clone dogs, in many parts of Korea - they eat dog! And they now want to export their native dog…as a pure bred show dog.

The Jindo is South Korea’s native dog and the government wants to try to interest others outside of Korea interested in the breed. They’d love for it to be in the prestigious dog shows. There is a problem though. Exporting this dog will be difficult because it is considered a “cultural treasure.”

The government got the Jindo recognized by the British Kennel Club, but it is not yet in any competitions. The American Kennel Club has started the process to recognize the Jindo as well.

How much should people be fined for not cleaning up after their dogs?

I recently reported about New Yorkers seeing increased fines for not picking up after their dogs. Well, leave it to New York dog owners to find a way to get out of the ticket. Whoopi Goldberg reported on the TV talk show, “The View” that they’re using the excuse that they “forgot” their identification. It seems tickets can only be issued by showing your ID to the enforcement officer. I guess looking at the license the dog is wearing around it’s neck isn’t an option.

A poll was taken online asking how much someone should be fined for not picking up after their dogs. The largest number of votes was for $25. Is $25 enough to deter someone from leaving the poop on the street? I think not. The second highest number of votes was to pay nothing. If you don’t punish bad behavior or have to suffer some sort of consequence, the unwanted behavior doesn’t change. That applies to training dogs and people!

Coyotes Attacking Dogs And Small Children

Coyote attacks are on the rise from California to Florida. Coyotes have been sighted near wooded areas all across the country in their search for food. Unfortunately those same areas are inhabited by people.

Wiley Coyote

There have been attacks on small dogs and in California, even attacks on small children. The coyotes are getting bolder the hungrier they get. A coyote hid in the bushes at a park & as soon as the nanny got far enough away, grabbed the small child by the head and proceeded to drag it away before it got into a tug of war with the nanny. Another coyote stalked a child playing in his yard & came into it’s yard when the parent went inside briefly to grab the phone. Maybe that’s where “Wiley Coyote” from Road Runner cartoon fame got the name.

It is advised that you stay close to your child at all times and carry your small dog when walking on trails.
