Holding Pet In Your Lap While Driving Is Still OK

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill Saturday that would have banned drivers from holding a pet in their lap while driving. He said the bill was not important enough to pass… it wasn’t high enough priority. Dog in the Drivers Seat

I think that having a pet in your lap while you’re driving around (particularly a small pet) is especially dangerous. Rush Limbaugh the conservative radio talk show host says the bill is stupid and has dubbed it the “Paris Hilton bill” due to her love of pets - dogs in particular.

I say if it’s against the law to talk on your cell phone while you’re driving, or not put your child in a child safety seat, then dog’s should not be allowed to roam free in your vehicle. They are just as much a distraction as a cell phone, as a child, or as someone putting on makeup or texting while they’re driving.

Gov. Arnold recently passed the state budget after over 80 days of stonewalling and he threatened to only pass certain bills. He held true to his word by vetoing 95 bills and signing 114.

DNA Tests On Dog Doo Help Track Irresponsible Owners

Pooping DogThis is pretty funny… I just read a story that citizens in a small town in Italy are getting fed up with irresponsible dog owners. They are tired of seeing dog doo on the streets,  so the city government plans to create a DNA database and dog’s will be identified by their poop. And that poo will be tied to the owner who will then be fined.

The DNA test will cost about $19 US, which is more than the cost of the fines. A town in Israel has implemented a similar program, it’s about six months old now and dog owners must take their pets to the veterinarian in order to get a mouth swab for DNA testing.

A good idea? I think so. However, it can only work in small towns where everyone knows everyone else… or at least recognizes everyone else.

Dog Kills Baby By Mistake

Here’s a sad story… a three-day-old baby girl in Youngstown, Ohio was killed by the family’s seven year old dog. It was ruled an accident because the dog apparently thought the baby was a squeaky toy or stuffed animal - which it was used to playing with.

The family left the baby in a baby bed in another room and the Siberian Husky took the baby from the bed and shook it to death, it seems. When the father told the dog to put the baby down, it did, just as it did with all its toys.

When the ambulance arrived the baby still was alive but died en route to the hospital. Ironically the same hospital where she was born three days before.

This goes to show how critically important it is to train your dogs… especially when a new baby is being introduced into the household.

L.A.s Top Dog

A True BH Chihuahua

With the new movie “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” coming out, I thought it was the perfect time to point out that Los Angelenos love Chihuahua’s. Just ask Paris Hilton - who has like 12 of them! (My neighbor has two & I used to have 2 as well - at different times.) As a matter of fact, the Chihuahua is the number one breed of dog owners in L.A. There are 59,684 registered Chihuahuas in L.A. County. The next most popular breed is the Labrador with 58,071 registered Labs. Of course, not everyone registers their dogs, so the numbers could be even larger.

Television Documentary Puts Dog Show At Risk

The BBC documentary entitled, “Pedigree Dogs Exposed” claimed that many dogs are bred for beauty rather than health, and that prompted some of the annual Crufts dog show sponsors to pull out.
Dog Show
The claim was that there was inbreeding, which caused health problems in the dogs.

The Kennel Club, which runs Crufts (Britains largest dog show), said it might cut ties with the BBC over what it called the network’s unfair reporting.

Dog Dials 911 To Save Owner

German ShepherdIn Scottsdale, Arizona, Buddy the German Shepherd service dog saved his owner by calling 911. Buddy’s owner had a seizure & Buddy dialed the phone with his teeth…as he had been trained to do. Buddy can be heard whimpering on the 911 recording.

This isn’t the first time Buddy has called 911. He’s made about 4 previous calls. Buddy’s owner says not only is Buddy his guardian, but he’s his best friend too.

Dog To Testify In Murder Case

For the first time in history, a dog will take the witness stand in court. Scooby the dog was the only witness to what really happened when his owner apparently committed suicide 2 years ago by hanging herself in her Paris apartment. The woman’s family insist that she did not hang herself but was murdered.

Scooby was shown a lineup of potential suspects & barked furiously at one. Police want to use that as eveidence but prosecutors say “No way” - that Scoopy can’t remember who did it (if she was murdered) & anything the dog would “testify” in court would be inadmissible.

Clone Dogs Have Puppies

Snuppy, the world’s first cloned dog has just fathered 10 puppies! And not just any puppies mind you. Their two mothers are clones themselves.

This is the first time in history that a clone has had a family from a clone.

Michael Vick’s Dogs Get A New Start

I watched a new reality type show last night on the National Geographic channel (right after Cesar Milan’s “Dog Whisperer”). The show was called “Dogtown” & it’s about the “Best Friends Animal Sanctuary” (the largest no-kill animal sanctuary in the nation) & the dogs who they rescue from neglectful &/or abusive situations.

Cherry

Last night’s episode (which I think was a rerun) was about the pit bulls from former football star Michael Vick’s dog fighting ring. One dog in particular was heart-breaking. Cherry was so terrified of people that he cowered in a corner when they came near his pen & he wouldn’t walk - he would lay prone on the ground instead.

A trainer finally broke the ice with Cherry & he learned to trust the trainer. Now, 9 months later, Cherry has turned into a friendly, playful pup that takes walks, plays with toys and doesn’t even mind cats. And now he’s ready to move to a foster home.

It just goes to show that even terribly abused dogs are so forgiving & can learn to trust people again - even though they were their abusers.

Cops Are Irresponsible Dog Owners Too

The San Diego, CA police officer who left his canine partner Forrest, the 5 year-old Belgian Malinois in his hot cruiser outside the police station was initially charged with the dog’s death. He was also facing disciplinary action. But the charges have been dropped against him.

The City attorney decided to drop the civil claim because the officer has showed remorse and promised to help raise money to reimburse the police department for heat alarms that were purchased for its canine cars.

He was charged with one misdemeanor count of animal endangerment. If he would have been convicted, he could have faced up to six months in jail, a fine and ordered to pay restitution.

This isn’t the only police dog to die in a hot patrol car. As I reported back on July 27, a police dog in Mulberry, FL died the same way.

You would think cops would be more responsible dog owners!
