Pet Friendly Oregon City No So Much

Copyright 2009 The New York Times Company

An affluent, dog loving community in Portland, Oregon has decided that there is a limit to how much “tolerance” they have for dogs. Pearl District residents are tired of stepping over & around dogs in the local food stores.

People aren’t complaining until they see major violations, like urinating or pooping on the floor, or a dog grabbing food off the shelf. I love dogs too but having dogs in a food store is a health issue.

Portland is a dog crazy city & they are taking an unusual tact, distributing posters and pamphlets to about 4,500 retail stores that sell food. The message is this: ‘Animals, except those trained to help the disabled, are not allowed.’ And a new poster created by the state says, “Animals that provide support or companionship are not regarded as service animals” for those inclined to stretch the limit of the definition of “service dog.”

For those who just can’t bare leaving their dog outside, the activedogs.com website sells cards that identify your dogs as a service dog for less than $30; the Web site notes that it “is not a certifying agency, nor do we hold any responsibility for information that you have us put on your ID badge.”

Don’t Even Think of Leaving Your Dog in Hot Car

Hot dog in car

Summer, hot temps, cars & dogs do not go together. Many well meaning owners leave their dogs in their cars with the windows cracked when they do errands only to come back & find their dog dead. It happened to a contestant auditioning for the “American Idol” singing talent show. The terrier dog was left in the car in Denver on a 91 degree day. By the time the owner came back, the dog was dead.

Even cracking the windows is not enough to ventilate a hot car where the inside temperature can increase by 30 degrees in just half an hour. And it only takes a matter of 5-10 minutes on a hot day for a dog to wind up organ-damaged or dead.

Please read this story before you think about leaving your dog in your car…

Five Legged Puppy Gets New Owner & Loses A Leg

Precious (now called Lilly), the 5 legged Chihuahua mix puppy that was born with 5 legs & was bought for $4,000 by a Charlotte, NC woman – saving it from a “oddity circus,” just had her 5th leg amputated & is recovering at home with her new owner.

Donations are coming in to help the new owner pay for some of the expenses she incurred getting the puppy (including the surgery).

There’s an interesting twist to the story. The “side show” owner may sue because he paid $1,000 to the seller before the new owner bought the puppy.
