No offense but it has to be an incredibly slooow news day for this story to make the news (I saw it on the national news)! But hey, I’m talking about it too…
In today’s economy, throwing a $10,000 “Bark” Mitzvah bash for your dog may seem a little extravagant. Not for New Yorker David Best, whose dog Elvis was the recipient of such largess. Best absolutely loves Elvis (who judging from the video looks like a pretty laid back pooch) & could think of no better way to show his love & appreciation than to throw Elvis a party. (It sounds like a thinly veiled excuse to throw a party to me.) Over 100 guests attended, including reknowned sex therapist Dr. Ruth. And it sure looks like David & his guests enjoyed the party much more than Elvis did.
If you had an extra $10,000, would you throw your dog a party?

Marjorie Knoller, the San Francisco lawyer who allowed the 2 vicious 100+ pound Presa Canario dogs she was caring for to kill her neighbor Dianne Whipple in 2001 - may be going back to prison. Knoller served 16 months of a 4 year sentence in prison before she was paroled for the crime, which had been reduced to involuntary manslaughter. A superior court judge on Friday reinstated the jury’s original second degree murder conviction.
The judge ruled after listing some of more than 30 incidents in which Marjorie Knoller’s dogs bit or lunged at other people, and there was even a veterinarian’s letter warning that the dogs were dangerous.
Knoller now faces 15 years to life in prison when she’s sentenced on Sept. 22, 2008.
Knoller will be held in jail until her sentencing, without bail, since she faces a possible life sentence, has no community ties and can be considered a flight risk.
I say it’s about time irresponsible dog owners get exactly what’s coming to them!

In Buenos Aires, Argentina, an 8 year old dog named China found a young baby only a few hours old in a field & rescued it by carrying it 50 meters & placing it with her own litter of six newborn puppies. China’s owner heard the baby crying & found him among the pups covered in a rag several hours later.
The premature baby girl was abandoned by its 14 year old mother. However the mother did reveal herself after the incident made the news, although she is saying very little about what happened.
Authorities say had it not been for China, the baby probably would have died.

Bernann McKinney, who paid over $50,000 to have her beloved pit bull Booger cloned by the South Korean biotech firm RNL Bio, now has 5 Booger Jr’s. She is also now the subject of controversy. Questions were being asked if McKinney was in fact Joyce McKinney, a former Hollywood beauty queen who was involved in a Mormon sex slave kidnapping over 30 years ago.
The young Joyce was convicted of wrongful imprisonment & spent 3 months in prison. The controversy arose when people thought they recognized McKinney from her younger, “wilder” days - in which she also posed nude for men’s magazines.
Side by side pictures show the uncanny resemblence. Although Bernann McKinney initially denied that it was her, she recently admitted to it.
The revelation about McKinney was not the first bizarre twist relating to South Korean cloning. Hwang Woo-suk, a scientist once revered as a national hero, became a global embarrassment after it was revealed in 2005 that he faked evidence to bolster claims of what would have been breakthrough research on cloning human stem cells.

People love dogs…and purebred dogs are a favorite. Thieves are no different. Dognappings are on the rise with the economic downturn. In the first five months of 2008, the American Kennel Club noted three times as many dog thefts as the year before.
Purebred or designer pups can cost thousands of dollars. And many are small enough to grab up & put in a jacket without anyone noticing. Toy breeds, puppies, and purebred dogs that look expensive or unusual are the most vulnerable. Among the stolen breeds tracked by the AKC in 2008 are Yorkshire terriers, poodles, Pomeranians, shih tzu & bulldogs, to name a few. With so many websites & other outlets where you can sell a dog, many people won’t ask questions if they can buy a designer pup for half the going rate. But not only are the dogs being sold, they’re also being stolen to claim rewards, & given as gifts. Around the holidays are prime dognapping times.
It seems that dognapping is a crime of opportunity. With the economy the way it is today, anything that can bring in money is fair game. And with many breeds of dog going for thousands, sadly stealing an unattended dog is a no-brainer.

Sam Diesel, the 2 year old German Shepherd police dog died from the heat after he was found in a police cruiser. The dog was routinely kept in the police cruiser with the air conditioning on. But on this day, the air conditioner failed and the dog died from the heat. No one knows how long the dog was in the car without AC but he was in the car for more than one hour while his handler was inside the police station working.
Sam Diesel was bought back in October for $12,625 and was paid for by donations from local WalMart employees when the police did a fund raiser.
It just goes to show, no matter who you are, you should never leave your dog alone in a car on a hot day.
See Sam here…

Over 200 people were bitten by dogs in one day in Ahmedabad, India! In 2007, there were around 80,000 dog bite cases reported by hospitals in Ahmedabad. Stray dogs have over-run many cities in India, so much so that a law was passed last year to sterilize the thousands of strays. But, none of the agencies responsible for project has bothered to start work. That’s government for ya! :p

An elderly woman near Sydney, Australia is lucky to be alive. She was attacked by a large male kangaroo (over 6 feet tall & over 200lbs) when she was walking on her farm. The kangaroo mauled her face, back & hands & she suffered a concussion before her son’s dog rushed to her aid. The dog heard her screaming & chased the kangaroo off. If it hadn’t been for the dog, the woman may have been killed.
This attack wasn’t the first. Kangaroos have overrun that part of Australia, the males in particular are a nuisance, & people have complained about them for years. Obviously kangaroos are not the cute & cuddly animals we see on TV or in the zoo. WaMu/Washington Mutual (the bank) may want to rethink their latest commercial showing people being safe & secure in a kangaroos pouch!

A Forrest County, Mississippi man tried to rob a home when he was confronted by the owner’s dog. The dog attacked the intruder. The man pulled out his gun & shot himself in the leg instead of shooting the dog he was aiming for. Sadly for the burglar, his leg is going to have to be amputated. That’s what he gets & I have no sympathy for him whatsoever.
