Lost Dog - Put Out An Amber Alert

Doggie social networking websites are nothing new. There are a few of them. They’re basically a MySpace for dogs & their owners. But a new site not only offers a meeting place, but it also offers the first ever Amber Alert for dogs.

If your dog comes up missing, there’s a free service at Dognamic.com to find your pup & hopefully reunite the two of you fairly quickly.

The site features a virtual flier for missing dogs. Users can create a personal profile page for their dogs, then drop it into the Missing Mode. Members within a designated distance from the missing animal’s ZIP code will be notified by the Web site’s ticker system, which is similar to the news scroll we see at the bottom of the television screen.

Their sister site at DogAmberAlert.com is scrolling Amber Alerts all the time for 6 different US cities. It looks like if you live within 50 miles of any of these cities, you can put out your own doggie Amber Alert. It’s a new site, so I’m sure that once more dog owners find out about it, more cities will be included.

I think it’s a great idea. Check it out & spread the word!

Is This My Dog?

An Oregon man swears the dog he picked up from the boarding kennel is not his dog. However the kennel insists it is.

The problem arose when Ken Griggs left his black labrador Callie at a kennel for a week while he went on Spring break. When he came back, the dog he picked up looked like Callie but didn’t behave like Callie. Even the family cat, who loved Callie hissed at the impostor.

The owner of the kennel said Griggs has the right dog. But Callie’s vet examined the dog Griggs brought home and found evidence that it’s not Callie.

To make matters worse, there were 7 black labs boarded at the kennel when Callie was there. So it may be a case of a mix up. But the kennel owner & the other dog owners say no.

Dognappings On The Rise

Dognapping used to be fairly rare. But now with the rise of designer “pocket pups” being sold for thousands of dollars, dognapping has proven to be quite lucrative.

And the dognappers know what they want. Toy breeds such as Chihuahuas, Yorkshire terriers and Maltese are especially desirable because they can fetch as much as $2,500.

A common trick the dognappers use is to pose as potential buyers. Generally two or more people come to look at the dog, one distacts the breeder and the other takes the dog(s) and runs off. The same tactic happens in pet stores too.

Some dognappers will sell the dog, others will wait for a reward to make money.

Whatever you do, take precautions to safeguard your dog. Never leave it unattended, even if you’re just rushing in to grab a coffee. And be sure to microchip him/her. It’s one of the best ways to recover your dog.

Dog warden accused of dumping dead dogs in mass grave resigns

MCCONNELSVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A dog warden accused of illegally dumping the bodies of euthanized dogs into a shallow grave in eastern Ohio has resigned.

Jeff Driggs has been on unpaid leave since March 31. After investigating the mass grave behind the Morgan County dog pound, Ohio EPA officials cited the county for illegal dumping and ordered the bodies transferred to a landfill.

County commissioners voted 2-1 Monday to ask Driggs to resign or be fired, with Commissioner Dean Cain opposing dismissal. A fellow commissioner says Cain is a former dog warden for the county.

In 2002, Driggs admitted shooting more than 600 dogs at the pound instead of euthanizing them with lethal injections. He has served as warden for 21 years.

Woman Run Over By Dog Gets Settlement

An Ogden, UT woman was accidently run over by a truck that belonged to a police officer. It seems the officer left the truck idling while he got out to respond to a call. His German Shepard police dog jumped into the front seat and knocked the truck into gear, sending the truck moving, where upon it ended up hitting the woman, shattering her pelvis.

The woman sued for $580,000 but was only awarded $300,000.

South African Police Batter Irresponsible Dog Owner

A Cape Town, South African woman ended up in the hospital with severe facial injuries after allegedly being beaten up by metro police officers. They confronted her when the dog she was walking (her daughter’s Jack Russell puppy) pooped in the street and she didn’t pick it up.

The dog defecated twice that morning and the woman only had one bag, which she’d already used and thrown away.

Apparently residents of that section of town are fanatical about people cleaning up after their dogs during walks, and the police obviously aggressively enforce the rules.

I think it’s a terrible thing what happened to this woman. But I’d love for it to happen to my irresponsible neighbor just once. His dog poops in doorways, on steps, on the sidewalk. A little police brutality might teach him to pick up after his dog…which he never does!

Pit Bulls Being Abandoned In Record Numbers

It seems that the allure of the Staffordshire bull terrier (aka pit bull) has worn off in London, England. Hundreds of the dogs have been abandoned in Greenwich and several other cities around London.

Apparently the dogs were seen as a fashion statement and when the fad was over, there went the dog. And the reputation of the pit bull probably didn’t help matters. Dog are not disposable like last season’s shoes. That’s why it’s so important to think long and hard before you rush out and get a dog.

Speaking of aggressive dogs…

There’s a dog sanctuary in the UK that is home to unwanted dogs - many fall into the dangerous breed category, like pit bulls and rottweilers. The dogs at the Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary generally end up here for severe aggression problems including mauling people and even death of other animals.

The fierce breeds are generally owned by “the moron brigade”, which buys them for their perceived dangerous qualities. A dog’s behavior is shaped by the owner. Irresponsible owners equal dangerous dogs unfortunately. Dogs need obedience training, they need to understand who is the “Boss” (the Alpha leader), especially notoriously aggressive  breeds. Otherwise, you’re walking around with a ticking timebomb.

Drug Dealers Try To Steal Womans Dog

A Calgary, Canada woman nearly lost her 4 month old Staffordshire terrier pup and her life when 5 men and one woman ganged up on her and tried to take her dog.

Turns out a drug dealers dog was stolen and it looked very similar to this womans. So it was a case of mistaken identity. That didn’t stop the would-be thieves from putting a knife to the woman’s throat. She screamed and her stepfather rushed out as well as several neighbors and scared the thieves away. Police are looking for them.

Update on Killing 100,000 Dogs in India

Authorities in Indian-Administered Kashmir’s main city have canceled plans to poison nearly 100,000 stray dogs as part of an anti-rabies program, an official said Friday after protests from animal rights groups. Instead they will try to sterilize them.
