I mentioned Toby the Golden Retriever before. He did the Heimlich manuever on his master and saved her from choking. No surprise, he was just honored as “Dog of the Year” by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Toby wasn’t the only heroic pet. There’s Winnie, the “Cat of the Year.” She saved her owners from being overcome by carbon monoxide gas, which could have killed them.

Courtney Chase, a former child star of the television show, “Blossom” saved a Shih Tzu puppy from being drowned by her neighbor. Courtney with the help of her sister rescued the pup from the neighbors apartment after seeing him try to drown the dog in the swimming pool. The girls rushed into the neighbors apartment, grabbed the dog and Courtney gave it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. They rushed it to the local vet and the pup survived.
The Los Angeles District Attorney filed a ‘cruelty to an animal’ felony charge against the neighbor for “unlawfully, maliciously and intentionally” holding the dog under water. He faces up to three years in prison.

A family dog walking on a trail in Hong Kong with its owner was attacked by a python snake. The owner, a British woman heard her dog scream and rushed to the sound where she saw a 14 foot python squeezing the life out of her 44 pound mixed breed dog, Poppy.
She kicked and fought with the snake and to her surprise, it let go and slithered away.
There’s concern that this may be a predator python as a Husky was killed by a python in the same area the previous year.

Titus the Sequim, WA police dog is being retired after 3 years because he’s not aggressive enough. He makes a great drug sniffer, but he won’t bite the criminals. So sadly, he will lose his job and be transferred to another police department.
Obviously, Titus is a lover, not a fighter.

A family dog in West Vancouver, Canada saved his human kids from a bear. The children, aged 2 to 6 were in a treehouse when the bear wandered into the back yard. The dog stood at the base of the tree, barking at the bear and wouldn’t move.
The bear eventually left after the parents came out banging pots and pans.
It’s believed the bear came for the plums in the plum tree. Needless to say, the home owners demolished the tree to keep away any other bears that may be tempted.

A security guard in Australia spotted two men who appeared to be breaking into a van. When the two men, wearing large black hood over their faces saw the guard, they lunged toward him – which caused him to fall over a bench.
Unfortunately for them, they didn’t see the big Rottweiler near the guard. The dog chased the men for a time but came back to stand by the security guard until help could arrive.
When the men fled, they lost the hoods that were on covering their faces, so the guard was able to give the police a good description.

In Australia, a heroic German Shepard dog named Jet heard the screams of a woman being dragged off by a rapist and leapt into action. Jet was on a walk in the park with her owner Mick when she broke free of her leash and ran toward the sound of the frantic woman. Jet’s owner was wearing headphones and didn’t hear the woman’s cries for help. As Jet approached the woman and the assailant, the man saw Jet and ran off.
Mick said it was completely out of character for 2 year old Jet to break free of her leash. But obviously Jet’s protective nature caused her to react the way she did. Unfortunately, when the police arrived, there was no sign of the rapist.
