Dognappings On The Rise

Dognapping used to be fairly rare. But now with the rise of designer “pocket pups” being sold for thousands of dollars, dognapping has proven to be quite lucrative.

And the dognappers know what they want. Toy breeds such as Chihuahuas, Yorkshire terriers and Maltese are especially desirable because they can fetch as much as $2,500.

A common trick the dognappers use is to pose as potential buyers. Generally two or more people come to look at the dog, one distacts the breeder and the other takes the dog(s) and runs off. The same tactic happens in pet stores too.

Some dognappers will sell the dog, others will wait for a reward to make money.

Whatever you do, take precautions to safeguard your dog. Never leave it unattended, even if you’re just rushing in to grab a coffee. And be sure to microchip him/her. It’s one of the best ways to recover your dog.
